Where to Buy Lists

targeted mailing lists

It’s hard to find lists that convert.

For years now, my company has been looking for targeted email lists.  Here’s how we do it.

We purchase from companies that maintain lists.  Most of these sites allow you to slice and dice the data and export a particular niche.  For example, I could get all of the direct marketing agencies in Philadelphia or I could access all of the brand managers at companies with sales in excess of $50 million.

The only problem is that while I can export these lists, the one thing that I can’t do is download the email addresses.  And, in our business, prospecting usually starts with email marketing.  It’s how we generate leads.  It’s how we invite prospects to our webinars.  We just haven’t had as much success with cold calling as we did ten or more years ago.  Just too difficult to get the prospects on the phone.

So, we buy these resources for a year and we hire inexpensive international labor from countries like Bangladesh to do the work.  It’s hard, mindless work, and work that we can’t even keep our interns interested in doing for an extended period of time.

We’ve bought from companies like Redbooks, Ad Data, Salesforce, and List Giant.  The key for us is to get email addresses that will not only be received, but will actually convert into a legitimate lead for marketing to pass on to the sales department.

One thing that I have learned is that buying a list from somebody that emails you is probably going to result in a low delivery rate.  Such lists simply don’t convert very well for the most part.  I’m sure there are some good ones out there, but most of the ones that I’ve purchased have not been very good.  You know the quality is bad when they quote you $10,000 for the list and are then willing to settle for $1000!
