Social Networking: Men vs. Women

I get tired of all of the articles that talk about the difference between men and women.  We know; we’re different.

Women represent 57% of Facebook users.

Women represent 57% of Facebook users.

One of the places where those differences show up is in social networking sites.

Here’s some stats regarding use of Facebook by the sexes.

  • Facebook attracts 46 million more women than men per month and is 57% female.
  • Women have 8% more friends on average than male members.
  • Women do 62% of the postings.
Other Social Networking Sites
  • Women make up the majority of users on Twitter, MySpace, and Flickr.
  • Men are more active on Digg, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
It figures that men watch more on YouTube–it’s kind of like television.  Moreover, there is little interaction required on YouTube, something that men prefer.
The motivation to use social networking also differs between the sexes.
  • Women use social networking to make friends and make connections and share personal information.
  • Men use them to gather information and increase status.
  • Men use social networking to store contact information that may be needed at a later date.
