Newspaper Woes Continue
As if plunging circulation wasn’t enough, the newspaper industry was the worst hit medium from the horrible
economy in the USA and worldwide.
Newspaper advertising revenues dropped 29% in the second quarter of 2009, according to the Newspaper Association of America. Nationwide, the drop converts to $2.8 billion less dollars flowing to what was once the mainstay of advertisers.
Online advertising for newspapers was once a growth area for the print industry, but it too fell off in 2009. Newspaper online advertising totaled $658 million which was a 16% decline from the previous year. Newspaper classified advertising even took a hit with a whopping 40% drop over the previous year as competition from sites like Monster and Craigs List grabbed more market share.
