BING-O
Microsoft continues to gain ground on Google, as evidenced by a study from StatCounter. It shows
Microsoft’s share of search rising from 7.2% in April to 8.2% in June.
Google is so far ahead with 78%, but it looks like it finally has a competitor other than the dwindling share of Yahoo search.
Mark Mahaney, an analyst at Citigroup (they still have analysts?) projects Bingo could get up to 20% market share by year end.
Google is in the business of selling classified advertisements, not selling technology. Its problem (if it has one), is that the most searched for terms like those in the sex and celebrities fields, don’t attract top dollar advertisers. That being said, there’s a heck of a lot of people searching for Britney Spears nude.
One of the cool things about BING is that it’s home page changes every day, but it’s always a great photograph. Perhaps this will work to get searchers to return just to see the pretty pictures.
No doubt, the initial gains for BING come from its $100 million advertising budget; that’s four times Google’s ad budget for the year.
