Canada Introduces SPAM Legislation

The Canadian House of Commons has introduced a bill to create the Electronic Commerce Protection Act (ECPA).  It is Canada’s version of the less than successful US CAN-SPAM legislation.

The bill seeks to cut down on SPAM, but also addresses phishing, spyware, and unsolicited text messages.

Penalties for violations are stiff.  Businesses and consumers can take civil action of up to $1 million against individuals and $10 million against companies or groups that violate the ECPA laws.
