Media Starting to Hit Big with Online Advertising

Broadcast TV stations generated over $1 billion in revenue for online advertising sales in 2008.  This was a 36% increase over 2007.

Newspapers are still out-stripping TV stations in most markets in terms of unique visitors to its web sites, but TV stations are gaining ground.  In 22 of 80 markets surveyed, TV stations have more unique visitors than newspapers’ web sites.

When it comes to local advertising revenues, pureplay Internet sites garnered a 47.2% market share followed by newspapers with 27.2%, directories like Yellow Pages with 10.8%, and TV stations at 8.3%.

Some newspapers operate newspaper voice personals and others offer internet personals as non-traditional revenue sources.  Revenues from these types of sources are figured into the totals.
