Fall 2008 showed the drop on Wall Street and the widespread negativity in business. This caused fourth quarter ad sales growth to be up just 2.6% over the 2007 fourth quarter.
Search engine marketing showed the biggest chunk of the internet advertising market accounting for 46% of the total. Display advertising totaled 21% followed by internet classifieds at 13% and rich media and lead generation at 7%.
Mobile advertising is another growth market, but pales in comparison to internet advertising, but is expected to close the gap in coming years. Some statistics show mobile advertising projected to be as high as $1 billion this pas year.
While internet advertising showed some growth, newspaper advertising declined by 17.7%, according to the Newspaper Association of America. Even more discouraging for newspapers was the news that online advertising revenue for newspapers declined 1.8% in 2008.
